This paper is the Inaugural Address of the President of the UK Operational Research Society (3 September 1996). The paper includes some historical background to the author’s life in OR, moves on to reflections on the changes in the nature of Operational Research OR practice in the UK, and then on to analysis of key success factors. It concludes with views on what to do within the Operational Research OR Society to respond successfully to the challenges of today’s Operational Research OR world.
