Many planning problems from industry and government can be represented graphically as network or network related models. The graphical representation yields very compact and easy-to-understand models, facilitates the modeling process, and improves model fidelity. The system GNGEN was developed at the Freie Universität Berlin as a tool for network modeling. It enables the user to define an arbitrary network related problem directly from the graph using a very simple nonprocedural modeling language. The algebraic model formulation can be eliminated.
