Abstract:

The Bachelor of Accountancy degree taught by the Department of Accounting and Finance at the University of Glasgow has as part of its core curriculum a course in Quantitative Methods. It covers introductory statistical and quantitative techniques, and included in the latter is the topic of Linear Programming. The MENTOR-LP module was demonstrated in the Department of Accounting and Finance by staff from the University of Strathclyde at one of the CTI-AFM Scottish Business Education Group meetings in 1995. As a result of that CTI-AFM meeting and the MENTOR demonstration, a decision was made to introduce this MENTOR module to first year Accountancy students taking the Quantitative Methods course. At the same time, the decision was made to monitor students’ responses to the MENTOR-LP module, and to evaluate and plan for the future integration of this package in the QM course delivery. This paper reports on the implementation of this CAL package, highlighting the curriculum development issues from the Accounting education perspective.
