In spite of a huge need for better decision making in health services there is a lack of awareness amongst health service staff both of what Operational Research OR is and its potential role. This article aims to address this problem by decribing the major contribution that Operational Research OR made to a programme of research relating to DNA technology. The conclusion is that Operational Research OR has a vital role to play in improving health services.
