Renal replacement therapies save the lives of patients with end stage renal failure but they are expensive. Moreover, the demand for treatment is growing and survival is improving. A simulation model has been developed that can help plan these services. Use of the simulation in East Norfolk Health Commission has shown that many more resources will be needed to meet the expected demand for services. The expense may be reduced, however, by increasing the transplantation rate. Simulation modelling is a flexible approach which has had the support of both the clinicians and the Health Commission, giving the results credibility as a basis for policy formulation.
