Lotus 123 with a linear programming add-in provides weekly schedules for staffing a reference and circulation desk at a university library. Times of availability for personnel vary widely. The system, which is flexible and easy to use, solves a noncyclical tour scheduling problem for a work pattern of several single periods, each requiring a recovery time of at least one period.
