OR/MS and production operations techniques have not always been used effectively in the past. Experience has shown that problems such as lack of communication, lack of mutual understanding between managers and model builders, unrealistic model assumptions, complex modeling procedures, and other factors has often resulted in models/techniques not being accepted and used by management. This paper illustrates how a decision support system (DSS), designed and employed as a ‘game-simulation’ can be used to overcome many of these types of problems and can be used to enhance ‘change’. An example model-based DSS is provided which illustrates the concepts and points made in the paper.
