Many organizations are starting to make major changes to the way in which they use information technology. Developments in both information and communications technology have made it economically feasible to link staff together by communicating networks of computers. Organizations seek to gain advantage by using such networks to improve the internal integration of business activities across divisions and departments. This paper examines the implications of attempting to move to this position from that of using computers in a more localised way within isolated business functions. It argues that such a move is not a simple one and that to obtain the full benefits, organizations will need to master a complex range of changes.
