This tutorial concentrates on two special features on a number of location problems that make them resistant to conventional econometric methods: (1) Behavior may require discrete choice among numerous alternatives, such as plant sites, and the alternatives may not be ordered in any simple fashion that facilitates analysis. (2) Natural economic models of behavior may not have characterizations in terms of closed or analytic econometric forms, as for example in the case of behavior assumed to solve a linear program or dynamic program, or equilibrium behavior in an economic game.
