The paper considers the way in which Operational Research OR is perceived by its clients and how it might become more accepted. It starts with an historical perspective and then draws a parallel with the process of quality and design in manufacturing situations. The concept of Appropriateness is introduced and a checklist of properties are given, all of which must be satisfied if an Operational Research OR study is to be properly accepted. Reference is made to a number of practical applications.
