Abstract:

There is currently some debate about the link between population size and environmental impact in different communities. It is generally agreed that the major human impacts on the natural environment depend on prevailing technologies, soils and climate, as well as patterns of culture and consumption. These factors vary from one region to another, and vary with the state of development of the population. This paper addresses the link between population, economy and environment in a comparatively small community, the island of Mauritius.
