The authors present a new methodology for detecting when the steady state behaviour of a discrete-time stochastic process has been approached after starting from a non-typical initial state. The main application and motivation for this method is the determination of a suitable truncation point for reduction of initialisation bias in computer simulation output. An implementation of this methodology is given which is most powerful for an exponential initial transient.
