As firms implement JIT, they have to reckon with the fact that the nature and level of inventories and the associated costs are determined by a whole host of operations-related factors. This article highlights these issues by providing a broader interpretation of the familiar river-flow anology. It also discusses the use of a cause-effect diagram to help understand the various factors and their interrelationships.
