Managerial problem solving, action-oriented thought in organizational contexts, is a key target of DSS intervention and has been extensively researched from a number of perspectives. Nonetheless, this domain is poorly understood, practice remaining largely beyond the range of effective scientific prescription. Existing theoretical work is reviewed in light of the nature of domain phenomena. A new theory building strategy, focusing on the conscious representational and reasoning activities of managers, is proposed. Related research needs and opportunities are identified.
