A comparative review and assessment of knowledge-based scheduling systems for the job shop are provided. Systems which have undergone concrete development are emphasised. The review is carried out from three perspectives: knowledge representation, temporal reasoning and control. Where appropriate, developments in AI, which could prove useful from the viewpoint of job-shop scheduling, are referred to. Some general conclusions and pointers for future development are offered.
