Abstract:

  • We categorize the folding patterns of planar space structures, such as solar sails.
  • We propose the methods that consider finite‐thickness and boom integration.
  • The effect of thickness is analyzed by a simple roll‐up of a Z‐folded membrane.
  • Three methods are proposed that can keep the crease lines straight.
  • A design is proposed to connect a membrane to deployable booms at multiple points.
