An optimal tool replacement problem for a machining center in a flexible manufacturing cell or system is discussed. This problem is formulated as an undiscounted Markov renewal program. Structural properties of an optimal tool replacement policy are shown, which would shed additional light on developing computational algorithms for finding an optimal replacement policy.
