In recent years, exploratory data analysis (EDA) became an important topic in addition to descriptive and inferential statistics. In EDA some of the traditional methods are seen on the basis of a new working and thinking approach combined with flexibility and an absence of models. Because of the ad-hoc character of the applied methods, the integration of computer science and the cyclical iteraction with a batch, it seems to be necessary to integrate elements of decision support systems in the implementation of EDA methods. Conversely EDA methods can represent an important part of statistical inference within a decision support system. For the description of the basic concepts, selected methods of EDA for univariate data may be sufficient.
