The paper presents a discrete event model, based on place/transition Petri nets, which is consistent with Supervisory Control theory. It considers the problem of designing a supervisor for discrete event systems. Petri nets offer some modeling advantages with respect to other models, such as finite state machines. An example for a manufacturing system will show the benefits and limits of the present approach.
