This paper proposes a uniform approach to BCH codes, Goppa codes, and subfield subcodes of algebraic geometric codes on curves of arbitrary genus, based on exponential sums along a curve. In this way it generalizes some classical and recent results on the dimension, the minimum distance, the covering radius, and the spectrum of long BCH codes.
