Perhaps the two most popular manufacturing systems in the eary 1980s were JIT and OPT. While JIT has continued to increase in popularity, OPT has received minimal attention in the production literature. However, the underlying concept of OPT, constraint management, is fundamentally sound and has great potential to help today’s manufacturers improve their competitive position. Because it is applicable in many settings not traditionally viewed as suited for JIT implementation, it seems appropriate to take another look at the potential of constraint management.
