This production planning and control system was developed for a real-life situation-a leaf-spring manufacturing facility which is representative of a discrete-item manufacturing system. The problems faced by the facility are typical of any such system. The work was carried out in three distinct steps; (1) product grouping, (2) development of an improved layout, and (3) development of an interactive on-line computerized production planning and control system.
