Layout planning is an appropriate area to apply optimization models. A method is proposed for evaluating general layouts (block layouts) when interdepartmental handling is directed along the aisles. The objective is to provide the facility planner with a method of judging the quality of the various facility layout alternatives, taking into account the location of the material transfer stations on the aisle network and by using the actual distances traveled by the handling equipment in this network. The evaluation method is applicable in cases where it is possible to position the material transfer stations at specific points. With this method, the impact of the location of the stations on the global performance of these general layouts can be evaluated. An optimization model for the problem of station location is proposed, along with a heuristic for large-scale problems.
