The complexity of evaluating expert system (ES) products calls for a formal decision analysis method. This paper presents an attempt to introduce a formal decision analysis in this area. The evaluation process consists of four steps: identification of the ES tool’s functional structure, quantification of the relative weights of the functional elements of the ES tools, comparison of the products for the functional elements, and aggregation of the product scores.
