Lean production has become more important than ever. The main component of lean production is pull/Kanban production control systems, which are also designed and implemented for adapting to available manufacturing systems. Adaptation efforts require extensive knowledge of design. In this study, a road map is developed for the design of pull/Kanban systems using axiomatic design principles. Depending on the available manufacturing system characteristics, the design methodology denotes what kinds of Kanbans are needed to use in regard to design parameters. The design methodology is tested in two real life manufacturing systems for validity and findings are provided.
