Turkey is experiencing a 80% external dependence on primary energy sources. This dependency brings out crucial economic and political risks. This study includes the development of an alternative project on utilizing the energy from an abundant natural resource in the country, that is, the solar energy. In this respect, the benefits of the transformation of solar energy to electrical energy are analyzed in detail, specifically for usage in road illumination. A detailed cost and feasibility analysis is performed for a road illumination system of 1000 poles. The time value of money is taken into account in doing the analysis. Present net worth, payback period and internal rate of return for different alternatives are assessed. This study is intended as a pilot study for further analysis. The intention is therefore to form a reference to further studies on the subject, and to provide a useful tool for future investment considerations.
