Abstract:

The subject of electromagnetic fields scattered by rough surfaces has been of interest due to its application in radar and communications. One method of expressing the surface shape is statistically and in this work the rough surface is described by a Markov chain. The surface heights correspond to the states in the stochastic matrix. A closed form scattered is derived and a large number of surfaces with the same statistical properties corresponding to a stochastic matrix has been generated. A number of Gaussian surfaces has been also obtained with the same statistical properties of Markov surfaces. Thus, there are two sets of rough surfaces, one according to the Markov chain, and the other follows Gaussian distribution. Using a ray tracing technique, the fields scattered by these surfaces are calculated and compared.
