Abstract:

The objective is to research on the existence of a significant variation in the number of earthquakes in the Iberian Peninsula throughout the year. A simulation model for the process of seismic activity in the Iberian Peninsula was used to create a sample of seismic occurrences that would allow to research the existence of a significant variation in the number of earthquakes throughout the year. Once this variation was detected the periods with greater number of seismic occurrences were identified based on a seismic catalogue. The existence of a significant variation in the number of seismic occurrences throughout the year was verified. This variation lessened as the seismic magnitude increased. Therefore, February, March, April and June were months in which the highest number of light earthquakes were registered. Earthquakes registering a moderate magnitude occurred mostly in February and October. No significant variation of seismic occurrences was detected throughout the year for earthquakes registering a strong magnitude.
