Many manufacturers have adopted the just-in-time (JIT) philosophy to improve productivity and regain or maintain competitive positions in their markets. Research conducted by academicians and reports provided by practitioners indicate the philosophy is working very well in many firms in the United States. Therefore, the purpose of this article is not to consider the questions ‘Will JIT work?’ and ‘How well does JIT work?’ but, instead, ‘Why does JIT work?’.
