Abstract:

The growth of manufacturing logistics as a science has been phenomenal, and yet manufacturing inventory turns have moved only from 7 to 7.5 over the last 30 years when economic variations are removed. Japan with JIT is the major exception. This is because most MRP projects are system driven, not people driven. A parallel can be drawn from McGregor’s Theory-X and Theory-Y styles of managing people, with the philosophy of MRP compared to JIT. The way people respond to MRP is the missing element in MRP planning.
