The implementation of vendor certification programs can expose lack of agreement within firms on quality criteria, the relative importance of quality, and responsibility for administration of the program. A framework developed to understand the evolution of relationships between a firm and its vendors can help a firm develop a road map to follow for managing vendor total quality assurance. It can also provide insights for correctly diagnosing problems in vendor relations and for minimizing adverse consequences.
