Abstract:

Electronic data interchange (EDI) is the direct electronic transmission, computer to computer, of standard business forms (purchase orders, advanced shipping notices, invoices, etc.) between two organizations. A survey of over 50 EDI users identifies the areas within purchasing where costs have been reduced and provides estimates of the size of these reductions. Reduction of work load for purchasing professionals resulting from implementation of EDI is also documented.
