This paper proposes a heuristic approach for disaggregating aggregate production plans and smoothing workload variation. The result is a detailed schedule for each product which states the quantity to be made in each period. The batch size is made consistent with technical and economic constraints. A priority rule based on inventory levels and workload smoothing is derived. Adaptable factors to widen the range of application are incorporated. The approach is examined by means of simulation and the overall results indicate that the approach could provide substantial benefits.
