Models of manufacturing systems in different operational contexts

The paper concerns the development of frameworks to assist companies with the selection and use of computer systems suitable for manufacturing control. By reference to structured models and a few basis tenets, it illustrates an objective means for choosing packages, such as those based on techniques like MRP (Material Requirements Planning), or for prescribing bespoke software. The paper includes examples of several companies of different type which are analysed against a single model.
