A growing number of manufacturers with a large demand potential have recognized that the creation of a well-performing integrated production and scheduling network composed of the manufacturer and a selected number of appropriate suppliers is a necessary precondition for implementing just-in-time supply. This attractive strategy is not without specific problems. Basic ones to be solved include the development of compatible, overlapping information systems as well as the integration of the physical flow of materials and products from the suppliers to the manufacturer. Optimizing the total costs of the logistical chain is a key objective in the design of new logistic systems.
