This paper presents the design of a production planning and control (PPC) system for the tool room of an engineering industry manufacturing various types of pressed products on a job-order basis. The problems faced relate to high work-in-process inventory, late deliveries of tools to the shops and lack of decision supports to management for proper planning and control. An optimal order release strategy is evolved by using a two-level mathematical programming approach. A set of shop schedules is generated by using the network scheduling technique. An information system has been outlined to facilitate decision support for the management.
