This article won the undergraduate student prize for 1988. Increasing numbers of U.S. industries are adopting JIT principles to achieve the benefits of shorter lead times, work-in-process reduction, inventory reduction, probem clarification, and greater visibility in production. The commitment to quality and improvement must be imbedded in the company to realize this potential fully. The primary resource affected is people, who must be educated, motivated, and challenged.
