Implementation of the method described increased production efficiency by 14% and reduced total manufacturing and distribution costs by $500000 per year. A linear programming transportation model, an economic-lot-scheduling model for sequence-dependent setup costs, and a safety-stock simulation model were applied jointly to restrict the number of different manufacturing facilities used to produce standard make-to-stock items.
