Crime modeling in recent times has its genesis in the decision of the U.S. President's Crime Commission to create a Task Force on Science and Technology to augment the work of the Commission staff, composed mostly of lawyers and sociologists. I was recruited as the director of that task force in 1966, one year after the Commission began and about 18 months before we were to finish our work. This brought my natural proclivities for modeling perspectives to the work of the Task Force and to the work of the Commission more generally.
