Spare parts are an attributive element of repairing activity in the enterprises. Regardless of their cost share in the whole volume of fixed production funds their importance is constantly growing. The lack of a given type of spare part at any given moment can break the normal production process incurring considerable losses to the enterprises, their contragents and to the national economy as well. In respect of this fact the problems of the planning practice are of great importance and unavoidable. On the basis of the Bulgarian experience in planning the need for spare parts for automobile transport and agricultural mechanisation the authors generalize and suggest a possibility of application of mathematical models and computer techniques to the planning of spare parts production. In this respect, for any activity based on planning, estimating the needs and maintaining of an optimal quantity of spares requires accounting of the ‘life-cycle’ of the operating equipment in the enterprises. It determines the economic benefit of the recommendations for the improvements of the relations among the equipment and spare manufacturers, consumers and the repairing service system.
