Abstract:

This paper is part of the special 50th anniversary issue of Operations Research. Like many papers in the issue, this was published without an author's abstract. The paper presents several landmarks in the history of modelling data flow between computers, with particular relevance to the ideas and theory of flows on the internet, both as informal anecdotes and with references to published work.
