This paper presents an application of the integration between Geographical Information Systems (GIS) and Multicriteria Decision Aid (MCDA) techniques to aid spatial decisions. The integration of GIS and MCDA allows fair, systematic and formalized evaluations of decision problems that must deal with spatial data, multiple criteria and multiple alternatives, besides conflictive objectives. Thus the decision-maker can explore the problem, enhancing the understanding and improving its definition. To illustrate the GIS Multicriteria integration, a didactic case study is presented: the selection of the best municipal district in Rio de Janeiro (Brazil), considering the quality of urban life. The Pareto Race multiobjective method has been adopted to deal with a problem which is multiattribute in its own nature.
