The maintenance times of modern ground to air missile weapon systems do not follow an exponential distribution. For this case, the method of imperfect preventive maintenance is studied with system life and maintenance time following general distributions. The paper uses semi-Markov processes to build an imperfect preventive maintenance model, and gives a calculation method of availability in imperfect preventive maintenance, and finally offers a simple method for distinguishing whether or not to adopt preventive maintenance under the rule of maximization of system serviceability.
