Abstract:

Although South Africa is classified as an upper-middle income country, a large proportion of the population is living on very low incomes. This paper focuses on income inequality in South Africa, using the Household Income and Expenditure Survey conducted in 1995 by Statistics South Africa. A regresssion-based approach and the Gini coefficient are used to study the effects of demographic variables (like population group, gender of head of household, etc.) on income inequality.
