Abstract:

A three-state device system is one in which the components as well as the system can fail in two different modes. Such a system is commonly modelled using a binary coherent structure and its dual. This paper derives this model as a logical consequence of certain reasonable conditions imposed upon the behaviour of such systems. It also gives a reliability version of Arrow’s Impossibility Theorem.
