We have observed recently the announcement of a series of projects of new thermoelectric power plants using natural gas in many states in Brazil, and, particularly in the case of the state of São Paulo, in areas considered critical in environmental terms as the Piracicaba River basin. The main objective of this article is to analyse the motivation and context for the creation of the Thermoelectricity Prioritary Program, a federal program launched to enhance the thermo-electric generation using natural gas in the whole country. Besides the reasons for the creation of this program, some of the consequences and alternatives to it are also discussed in the article.
