Based on the properties of chaotic phenomena, mutative scale chaos optimization algorithm (MSCOA) reflects the chaotic variable for the range of variables optimized. High efficiency was obtained by continually reducing the search space of the variables being optimized and thus enhancing the search precision. Simulation results for several test functions demonstrate the effectiveness of the algorithm. Economic dispatch from power plants is a non-linear programming problem with a mix of integer variables, continuous variables and non-linear functions. By applying MSCOA to the unit's economic dispatch first, the unit parameters and its load dispatch can be obtained simultaneously.
