Abstract:

With the progress of scientific knowledge on climate change, it is clearly recognized that efforts must be made to reduce greenhouse gases (GHG) emissions. Future scenarios for GHG emission should be analyzed. However in China local pollution is getting serious with the rapid economic development. Policy to control local environment problem is urgent to be conducted. In order to explore the benefit of policies on both GHG emission control and local environment control, this study simulates the effect of policies on carbon dioxide emission and sulphur dioxide emission. A model framework was designed to analyze the effect from technology options, and develop the relationship of these two gases' emissions from long-term view point. It is observed from the results that climate change oriented policies could simultaneously reduce sulphur dioxide emission by encouraging advanced technologies, and from the long-term view point, sulphur dioxide emissions will be reduced due to the concern that is, to some degree, a product of local air pollution with the income raising. These sulphur dioxide trajectories show that decreases may occur after 2020. Carbon dioxide emissions may keep increasing for several decades.
