Abstract:

The annual Australian Mathematics in Industry Study Group (MISG), held in Adelaide from January 31 to February 4, was attended by about 150 Mathematicians and Industry delegates from Australia and overseas. MISG is a forum for industry to present difficult and challenging technical problems to solve in a week long ‘brainstorming’ workshop. Day one is taken up with industry presentations, after which delegates work on selected problems in groups for the next three days. The workshop concludes on the Friday with summaries of progress made from the problem moderators. In this year's MISG there were two problems of an Operations Research flavour; one from Boral Quarries concerning the rationalisation of their South Australian Quarry operations, and the other from Faulding Healthcare concerning the efficiency of their automated warehouse operations in Sydney. A brief summary of these problems and the progress made in given.
