The beginning of the modern mathematical theory of nonlinear programming can be dated to 1950, and the second Berkely Symposium on Mathematical Statistics and Probability. Tucker presented a paper at this conference with the title ‘Nonlinear Programming’ in which the Kuhn–Tucker conditions, now known as the Karush–Kuhn–Tucker conditions were proved. This paper examines the links between the academic world and the world of problem-solving in the ‘real world’.
